The Open Boat Discussion question 1

Find evidence to support:
Life is determined by chance, not choices or what is "fair"

  1. "Shipwrecks are apropos of nothing. If men could only train for them and have them occur when the men had reached pink condition, there would be less drowning at sea" (346). The narrator mentions how people do not prepare for shipwrecks, and shipwrecks do not occur when men are in prime condition. Instead, shipwrecks occur by chance, and they cause weak sailors to drown at sea.

  2. "[...] watched the waves and wondered why he was there" (342) You would think that if someone could choose they wouldn't be in the middle of the ocean trying to get to land. It also isn't "fair" for the crewmen to have to try to stay alive like that so why would life be determined by that if the guy is wondering why he is there?

  3. "The correspondent remained in the grip of this strange new enemy - a current." (357) If he had the choice, I doubt he would want to be stuck in a current, being able to see shore but not get there.

    1. Yes, and then he also had nothing to do with getting out of the current and making it to shore.

  4. "A singular disadvantage of the sea lies in the fact that after successfully surmounting one wave you discover that there is another behind it just as important and just as nervously anxious to do something effective in the way of swamping boats"(342) This passage perfects the idea that what the men want and/or does not matter, the will of nature (the waves) will do what it always does, which is destroy boats with its massive waves.

  5. It's very important for people to understand that no matter what your choices are in life, life is not always going to be fair to you. If you do something good, that does not mean the heavens or nature will grant you something good, and just because you did something bad doesn't exactly mean something bad will happen to you. Right before my Papa died I got his tattoo on my chest, and tattoos are seen as gross and "only bikers get them", and 3 days later he died. Did he die because I got the tattoo?? No. Of course not. That is absurd for me to even think or bring up. Just like at the end BIllie dying. He did everything he possibly could for him and everyone to survive, except he is the one who ended up not making it. He did something good and ended up bad, so your choices don't exactly justify your fate/chance.
